The objective of this project was to redesign a device created by Progressive Insurance that gets installed in to the On Board Diagnostic Port of a vehicle. The device monitors driving to achieve more acurate assesments of drivers’ risk levels and abilities. For this project, our class was divided into several teams of about 8 students each. As a team we worked on many things collaboratively, and some things we assigned to members of the group to complete individually to increase productivity. I was in charge of making a working prototype, among other things. The redesign we created had a clicking mechanism that, when inserted into the port, would click to ensure proper installation. It also had a variety of other features; when not in place, the prongs that get inserted into the port are recessed to protect from external damage, and I also decided to make the shell clear, to maintain a feeling of honesty, as the device and its purpose may be perceived initially as a bit invasive.
